History “Today”: Pratil–India’s First Woman President


July 25, 2009. Exactly today, Pratibha Devisingh Patil became the first-ever woman to be sworn in as president of the Republic of India.
Patil served as the 12th person to ever hold office in India, which is the second most populous country in the planet.

The 74-year-old Indian president emerged victorious after defeating her nearest political rival Bhairon Singh Shekhawat during the presidential election held on July 19, 2007.

Patil was known for her philantrophic acts with her husband as well as various government services prior to her ascension as India’s president.
