“Be Still” When You’re Being Chased

The Book of Exodus, for me is one of the most exciting books in the Old Testament. It contains some of the most amazing miracles God ever performed during the time of Moses and the increasing children of Israel.

The 10 different plagues God sent as judgment to the gods of Egypt and Pharaoh; the “generosity” of the Egyptians on the day the Israelites were hurriedly leaving Egypt (the day of Exodus); the desert wanderings leading to the crossing of the Red Sea, among others, were all powerful handiwork of God in the Book of Exodus.

Of course, the Israelites had been slaves for centuries before Moses sprang up in their presence. Which was why when they were standing before the Red Sea during the “great escape” and Pharaoh’s powerful Egyptian army fast approaching, the Israelites complained to Moses and cried out for dear life (Exodus 14:11-12).

Ever been in that kind of a situation–where your greatest fear was right in front of you? The situation you dread the most?

Maybe the electric and water bills are there at your table and you wouldn’t want to take them out of the envelope anymore because you just don’t want to see the amount?

Or probably your a dad or a single mom, and your children told you today that enrollment in school starts next week and here you are, thinking, praying, asking God where do you get the money to pay their tuition?moses_parting_the_red_sea1

And maybe as you’re reading this, trails of situations you dread are playing in your mind right now.

We’ve all been in those kinds of situations.

God knows what you feel and is concerned for you as well. But check out Exodus 14:13-14

13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Sometimes, even when we’re at our wits’ end, we still try to think of ways to alleviate our situations. But there are also times when all we need to do is be still before God’s presence, wait for Him or just simply worship Him.

God can use our lowest, most discouraging moments in life as a platform for His power and goodness to be displayed. Why? Because He is fighting our battles.

Perhaps, as you lay there in your bed, still or probably praying, the Lord is already orchestrating something to turn things around for you and your family.

You see, when Moses pointed his staff towards the Red Sea, the huge body of water was divided into two sides. Can you imagine it? How fascinating it is to be in that scene where, the Israelites started crossing the Sea’s dry ground. (If I was there, I would have taken out my digital camera and started taking pictures and I’d blog about God’s miraculous work!)

And while the Egyptian army followed furiously, the Israelites were able to cross over to the other side. Moses pointed his staff back to the divided wall of water, and all of a sudden, the huge wall of H2O came crashing back to their normal flow, swallowing Egypt’s entire army.

Here was the ending of Chapter 14:

30 That day the LORD saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. 31 And when the Israelites saw the great power the LORD displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.

Here’s what I learned: let me repeat it, God can use our lowest, most discouraging moments in life as a platform for His power and goodness to be displayed.

Are you being chased by your own “Egyptian army”, be still, and be convinced that the Lord is fighting for you.
